Default My OTS+ Tune Experience

I am new to e-tuning. But this looks pretty sweet for an OTS+ tune. I felt like I needed to really grip that steering wheel, when I floored it, for the first time in a long time. Loving it. Was kinda hoping for a bit more. But, perhaps my smaller Corksport SRI, TIP & OEM CBE are holding that back?

I have yet to drive the required miles to send in the new log to @Justin@Freektune;. But, I'll get them to you soon and toss up some new vdynos.

By the way: I set my OCC Weight at 160 w/ tire height of 25.09.

Did another few pulls on my lunch break. All were a bit lower than the first vdyno above. Here is the best one out of the batch.

EDIT: I am pretty sure I had wheel spin on this pull. Comparing the logs. This second one looks better, from what I have learned so far. I will post the logs soon. Not sure how to tell by looking at the logs if I had spin. My tires are pretty quiet when they spin.

Awesome numbers! I was running a cobb OTS map which I didn't really like and then switched to the free Stratified OTS stage 2 map which is seems to have my car running much better. I've heard great things about Freektune so I'm sure you will be completely satisfied!

Default My OTS+ Tune Experience

I was gonna type this above. But I got called away from the computer. All in all, the car feels incredible. The power is there when I need it, now. Before, the car was peppy, but it felt a little disconnected. Much more at my command now... even when driving while staying out of boost.

I will definitely go full custom FREEKTUNE, when I get my larger intake and CS turbo.

I just finished my E85 tune by @Justin@Freektune; and am pretty happy with his work. I also have a 93 tune through him as well. I definitely need to get a better turbo though, a bit disappointed i didn't reach 300whp being fully bolted....but speed6. Justin, your tunes are awesome...thanks again.

Just for reference, what were your numbers from the 93 tune, compared to the e85? I'm in the same boat. Wrapping up my 93 ots+ from Freek, and thinking about the e85 ots+.

IIRC it was around 273 or so, but day to day temp differences while logging will change the numbers...unless of course you run both logs the same day within a reasonable amount of time to each other and on the same strip of road. I ran a log the following day after the one i posted and i was down about 10whp and up about 10fpt. so take it for what it is.

I don't trust virtual dyno #'s too much, but it gives a rough estimate.

Not sure how much I trust vdyno either. My first pull was 272. Everyone after has been 265-/+ car feels great though. I'm gonna try to not get so hung up on numbers. TRY. LOL

I just use it to roughly track my gains.

Just did my first 4th gear pull, today. Car is still feeling great. I kinda hoped for more constant horsepower pass its peak around, as all the OTS+ vdyno's on here I have seen seem to. But, it is what it is, right? One revision.

I've had the car for 2 years, now. I think I've done well so far and gained a shit-ton of knowledge from you guys. I wish I woulda known to go larger intake when I picked mine up. But I was super noob, then. Can't wait for the day I can pick up the CS turbo, larger intake and full tune. It may be a while though, unless business picks up.

Here is a newer vdyno and wot log.


EDIT: Concern....Should I be concerned about the WGDC hitting 99.9!?? @Justin@Freektune;

It means the wg is attempting its best to stay closed and build more boost. Basically you have hit the limit of the turbo

I can tell just by the sharp of your VD curves that your logging roads are very inconsistent. No Mazdaspeed will ever have peak hp at 4200 rpms as you are seeing in some of your logs

Ok. I wasn't sure if it needed to be the same road. I did see on another forum late lastnight that the road used needs to be the same and flat, free of bumps. I will try to find one and stick to it.

The road on my logs I sent you for the base and revision was a bit bumpy. It's hard to find smooth roads by my house and traffic is pretty congested by my work. Hope that didn't mess with my chances of gaining more power.

Looks like I need to figure out what road I used for that smooth vdyno run?

What conditions cause the vdyno to read peak hp so soon like that, I can know what roads to stay away from using?

I think ideal roads would be flat and smooth. I redid some of my logs last night because a portion of the road was bumpy. I wasn't even sure if it mattered but I did them in a different spot anways. Both my logs from the flat smooth road read the EXACT same hp/tq numbers so I was pretty impressed with the consistency of VD in that respect.

Exactly this. If you can't get two logs to lay perfectly on top of each other and be smooth. Then the road isn't sufficient for what you are trying to do. Ideally you should be able to log in both direction on the same road and get the same numbers. Pretty hard to find a road that flat though and a reason to take VD numbers with a grain of salt.

I'm just gonna stop sweating the vDyno numbers. All my roads here suck shit. Lol. Car feels awesome. That's all that matters. Can't wait for the larger turbo and full tune.

With that said, I found my log road will be using, for further evaluations; Damn near, identical gaphs in both directions. It's closest I am gonna get. It was the road I used for the more well rounded run, above, just further down it.

@Justin@Freektune; half of this run was in high 12's for AFR? thought that was danger zone.

ya you might want to trying cleaning MAF sensor and monitor your AFR at idle and cruising to make sure they are set where they need to be before going WOT.

have you tried emailing him that log for him to look at? did you try a different road and compare?

I would grab another log and see if it repeats. If so. You have a leak or hardware issue

I did a short one, before I saw this reply @ ~4100 to ~6000 and there were no signs of the issue.

I'll grab a few more tomorrow. If I am just doing WOT logs to check AFR at WOT, does it sill need to be the same road, or is that just for vDyno?

Just a thought. My AP was glitching earlier. I am hoping this is the issue. I did two WOT runs and the AP overlapped them as one. Weird.

Here is my latest vDyno.

For whatever reason, I have been running lean for the first half of some pulls and only at the beginning of some of my WOT pulls. (Seen in the most recent vDyno above.) One most recent was 12.9's for the first half of the pull. Most of the pulls, AFR's are falling within mid to high 11's.

I am pretty sure its not tune related. Something is off. If it were tune related it wouldn't be so erratic. But the cool thing about having a tuner is they are all about helping you out.

Justin is a great guy and is helping troubleshoot this.

So far I have double checked the torque on all DP bolts, looked for exhaust leaks, went back to the stock BPV, pulled a few more logs and sent them off to him. So far, the issue hasn't shown up again. At the beginning of one log the AFR's were lean for a about 4-5 cells of the CSV spreadsheet, which I believe is a very short time and nothing to worry about. I hope.

This shit freaks me out <- pun not intended.

So far, I have been hanging around 268/270 average whp. Can't complain too much for an OTS.

Car feels great. After I figure out the lean issue and complete my TBE, by getting the CNT CBE, I think I am going full tune. Can't wait for the BT. Need moar powa.

I believe I got this lean AFR at WOT shizz all figured out. Thanks to this thread... Very last post. SU Turbosmart - 10-20psi or 20-25psi spring for stock k04??

@Justin@Freektune; I have the stronger spring on the way, for my BPV. Meanwhile, I'm leaving the stock BPV in. I decided that I am going to buy a full tune from you VERY soon. But I am picking up a CS 3" intake first. That is on its way too.

Is the $75 OTS+ tune still a credit towards the full tune?

Why not 3.5" intake? If I could do it over again, I'd do it right the first time and get a 3.5" intake. I probably will eventually with a battery box as well, especially when I go to upgrade the turbo. I can't wait until spring to do my in tank meth tune with Freektune!

There's no point to go overkill on intake. You lose low flow resolution (idle, off idle) resulting in a rough idle and for example instead of having 0-4.5v of resolution, you only have 0-4v on MAF sensor. Even Bnr s3 and cs turbo can't outflow 3" intake. 3" is a good size.
