Timing chain/VVT replacement parts list
 

Made this thread per @Raider; request, in order to help future searchers.

Firstly, in order to properly time the engine you will need the timing plate and peg for the 2.3 disi mzr. you can buy one. i purchased this one since it was the best bang for my buck and i know i will use it more than once.
@Pseudonym; found this kit which is complete and reasonably priced.

In order to do the timing chain you will need the following parts

to do the vvt you will need to add the following parts

the parts with part numbers need to be replaced. they are one use, torque to yield items, but cannot be found in the diagrams, so you will need to search the part numbers.

I know this is in 3/6 land, but the parts are identical for the 6 and Gen1 3?

Meaning, these parts are for both models?

I just picked up my Speed6 yesterday from a TC/VVT job. Thought I'd add an actual invoice just to verify the list above. There are a few extra things on here that don't need to be part of a core do it yourself kit.

No reason, it's regular maintenance. Not expensive or hard to do yourself. Took me 4 hours dicking around. Probably could do it in two.

if I can get it done for free its just stupid not to.

Called my dealership last fall before i put the car up. I am at 74k. They said they would prorate the job. They all know my car has seen the track and was modded day two.
The chain is very loose and i wont drive again till thats sorted.
Maybe i will do it myself when my buddy gets home in spring.
But like you say. because i have the bulletin on my fridge, if i can get done for free why wouldn't I ?:thinking:

I just placed an order. Thanks for the list. It was super easy to follow. My local dealership confirmed that my VVT and timing chain are bad and said that they have never done one for under $1,200.

I was also told that they can not pro rate for warranty work since I have 84xxx miles.

Have to get this done for a buddy of mine... So thanks for the list

What do you guys think of this sound? vvt? i just bought the car, first mazda. I come from diesels so hearing this out of a car just doesnt sound right to me. watcha think?

You're fucked. I hope you have a lot of cash. It is the VVT. I hope you have a warranty where you bought it.

That's a lot heavier sound than vvt. sounds more like rod knock. vvt or timing chain is a tick. It may get that loud during a cold start but it goes away very quickly.

I think I'd pick up a new chain tensioner as well, but otherwise the kit does seem complete- nice find!

I'd so prefer my buy list to get shorter than longer lol

Isnt this kit $50 more than if you piece it to together AND missing the tensioner?

Idk, I don't think it was that expensive when was originally posted. And yes it is missing the timer.

FML. Pulled the valve cover today to investigate the rattle that I hear on part throttle. Timing chain is stretched. Check out the wear marks on the valve cover.

What sucks is that I have a roadtrip next week to New Jersey and we are taking the Speed. Planned on tackling this myself after the road trip with the help of @Opdahl; and his air tools. Should cost around $400.

Now I need to take it in sometime next week to Mazda and they quoted me $650 just for labor.
