Cool Another ~400WHP BNR Speed 3

First off shot out to @Haltech for this awesome site. I've learned so much about this platform since I purchased her back in 2007. From my early days of pushing 300WHP+ with the Hypertech to the newest numbers she's now putting down I'll post below.....If it wasn't for this site I would never have met @Lex....though he and I have never met......or spoken outside emails for that matter LOL!!!

I could have chosen any of the awesome tuners this site has to offer and I'm sure I wouldn't be disappointed with any choice I could have made. Ultimately the customer service Lex showed me while purchasing my Guardian Angel was the reason I went with him. I HAVE NO REGRETS IN MY DECISION.

For a month Lex did his best to pull as much power as he could from the K04. Honestly in hindsight I wish I would have dyno'd it because he completly transformed the car. I was a hardcore Hypertech fan not anymore.......and its all LEX's fault!!!! Anyways, after 70,000 miles it was becoming quickly evident that my poor K04 was getting tired.....(albeit she never once smoked on me even when I added the UR catted downpipe). So for my birthday last year and with Lex's backing I gave Bryan Nickell a call...........

Here's what he sent me

Which meant "she" would have to go....

Yes you can pull her out with out removing the mani..........here's proof

albeit it takes some work.....but it can be done

Out with the old in with the new

Make sure you put those banjo bolts on correct.....This is how I ensured I angled it right

Might as well change the stock MAP sensor out.....Love the PNP harness....

The most annoying connector ever to get to.............(MAP PNP plugs into this guy)

The Guardian Angel and tune isn't the only STRATIFIED route I took here

New BNR Stage 3 Hung........(again never removing the stock mani.......PITA you've been warned haha)

Lex if you don't mind I'd like to send a shot out to @JP@edgeautosport.com......He sent me all the new studs and nuts needed for attaching the new turbine......And he insured it got to me before this install while saving me considerably from what the stealership tried to rape me with......so Thank-you JP

Anyother BNR S3 installers have this problem??? (Yes this is with everything torqued down)

SURE FULL 3" Whale Penis installed (filter later replaced with AEM Dryflow.....Lex and I proved it makes a considerable difference)

Here's where I installed my STRATIFIED EBCS.....

Real quick note on this guy, Lex truly has a winner with this in my opinion. The velcro/hook and loop whatever its called that he uses is AMAZING you can attach it and reattach it as many times as you need and it holds as if its the first time.....He also gives these no bullshit REUSEABLE clamps for the hoses.....All this for $85.....uh duh easy choice for me!

Another STRATIFIED EBCS pic with hose routing......

Finally All done......really doesn't look that different then when I started LOL

Quick install notes: BEWARE BEWARE the amount of coolant stored in that K04......You've been warned hahahaha

So after all this it was time for me to give my car over to Lex.......This was a LOOOOOOoooooOOOOng process but worth every moment. Lex provided me with an initial map just so the car will start. Yeah between the whale penis, new MAP, 3 Port and BNR I guess needed it. For the next month, almost month in a half.....Lex worked his magic....I logged gave him feedback then he'd create a map.....I'd log, give him feedback and then he'd create a map. He constantly had to change parameters because we quickly realized how bad the gas was out here. (even with the E85)......But most importantly Lex remained soooo patient with me. Even when I couldn't always explain what was wrong to me or how much I hated one of his revisions.....he remained calm, made the necessary changes and finally got me to the point where I was finally ready to see......just how much WE had changed her......

When I first bought the car stock she put down 240whp/260wtq..........

Today..............well see for yourself..............

This was the second run. The first run she put down 399WHP 350WTQ......

My Current Mod List:
BNR Stage 3 turbocharger,
SURE ID300 full 3" intake/maf housing,
Stratified 3 Port EBCS,
3 Bar MAP sensor/harness.
Cobb V2 FMIC (anodized black core),
Turbosmart BPV (both 10-20PSI and 20-25PSI available, 10-20 installed),
JBR EGR Delete,
Cosworth BSD,
UR catted downpipe (metal substrate),
Corksport Testpipe,
Racing Beat catback exhaust,
Fidanza flywheel,
Guardian Angel,
Sure 1/8" Intake manifold and throttle body Gaskets,
NGK Step colder spark plugs

I've included a log I took a few days ago with the current revision we're running. I can not make any alterations to these maps whats so ever, only Lex can. Uncorrected this equates to 391WHP/356WTQ.......I'm still in shock.

Lex is the truth people. The fact that he's also engineered parts that I'm using to get to this point........I have no words excetp "ALEX I AM TRULY GRATEFUL TO YOU"...(even if you are hell bent on convincing this part Eleanor part Christine mut to kill me LOL)

Another happy customer:friday:.. ...THANKS @Lex and STRATIFIED can't wait for what we have planned next.......................stay tuned everybody...........

Thanks Jevon, the pleasure was mine as we worked through your tunes and setup. Really enjoyed the process and I am very happy to see your hard work in putting this setup together paid off.

This car at 80k miles is really a model setup for the FWD MS3 on stock block. Boost is around 23.5psi, timing is moderate and he is only running 3gallons of E85. Injector duty is at 90% up top and he has a very nice flat torque curve through a very large portion of the rev range allowing him to run around 4.5 seconds 60-100. No meth, no 5th port, no extra fuel. The setup is capable of a few more ponies with a more aggressive tune but I think this is a very happy place to be for a DD.

Great job Jevon and thanks for letting Stratified help you get there!

I was showing how close my WG actuator is to the fire wall Also something I forgot to mention with installing this way. You def want to remove the EGR valve for easier access!

Fantastic numbers! I also went with the BNR with a Lex tune. In week three or four of tuning and its been amazing. Im not going to be seeing those kind if numbers with no E85 and no meth with a stock block that just rolled 116k miles and racing in the heat we're keeping it conservative.

And yes leaving the exhaust mani is the way to go! I've done it both ways. Ya live and learn.

And that Velcro hook stuff is pretty badass. One of those stupid things you don't think about but you're glad someone else did.

You know not trying to scare you but Lex said we'd be keeping my tune "conservative" too.........Now I'm convinced ever since I told him I didn't like one of the earlier revisions......He is trying to make my car kill me with the crazy scary torque steer.....LOL!!!

The "velcro" on the Stratified EBCV is not the stuff you guys are imagining. It is designed for this purpose and the engine bay temperatures. No messy holes in the battery tray or ECU cover needed and you can always relocate the valve.

As for the BNR, there are a few more builds/tunes coming along capable of similar numbers. 400whp with that kind of torque curve on the stock block is pretty ideal in my opinion. The bigger turbos have more capability but the extra HP up top has to be worth the slight loss in spool of the smaller turbo and OEM plug and play. That turbo support brace alone is worth it if running a tubular manifold.

There's always a trade-off just like with everything else and that's why I keep harping - you have to know your goals before jumping into a build or tune. If you know your goals and don't know how to get there, I've put together several articles, always answer questions, and even have a phone support service if a longer chat is needed.

Man this really is an amazing turbo. I even told Bryan he needed to get with Mazda and convince them to use this turbo stock for the next Speed 3. He said they didn't want to contract with him because he wasn't a big "well known" company......

I've noticed little to no difference with spool up between this and the K0whore. However the boost comes on and simply stays on! Lex did a "reverse taper" setup with it which means at like 3500 rpm Im at somethng like 20psi and its just climbing in boost from there.....

Congrats.. @Lex; is truly the man when it comes to tuning. I love this setup even though traction is a problem 1-3rd gear. Up next is some meth to cool things down.

And that sounds perfect, im not looking for 500 plus, nor am i chasing numbers, im content with the setup i have now. Just needs some more tuning and ill be content, but at some point i want a bigger turbo, i have always been fond of the BNRS3 and its capabilities. Considering this is my daily (though its set up like a race car) I drive the shit out of it, so eating up tires cuz im always spinning, or dealing with the lag of a bigger turbo... yea... DO NOT WANT. I have been reading more and more about it, just need to make up my mind. seeing you and @atvfreek;'s threads definately almost made me 90% sure im gonna get a BNR.

With a safe setup that 365 ft lbs of torque is not what I consider unsafe. Heck, lots of people run more torque than this on the K04. The key here is that turbo holds torques much deeper into the rev band meaning more area under the curve and more hp.

Remember

HP = torque*RPM/5252

Just because there is a "man sized" turbo under the hood, doesn't always mean it will outperform a smaller turbo. You need fuel, knock protection, a well flowing setup, and most importantly a tune to put it all together. What these BNR's are doing right now is probably better than at least half of all the GT30 or bigger turbos on the speeds right now.

Plus... they cost less, are easier to install, have no IWG problems, get to use the factory turbo bracket, and can even use the stock TIP if you needed to. Lots of good things about going with the BNR.

would this setup have benefited from the boost dial? Obviously you got a good thing going as is; but as far as making the tuning easier I mean.
