Mine were just slightly loose but I went ahead and added the rubber winshield rope just to be sure. Definitely more solid now.

I have always noticed a bit of spoiler movement when I close my hatch so I decided to check this out today, I found the two middle nuts holding it on and snugged them up. But the two outside nuts seem to have these white plastic covers on them. Does anyone else have this? Shouldn't these covers keep the nuts from coming loose? More importantly, how does one remove these covers to make sure the nuts are in fact tight?

My mistake, I just skimmed the first post for fastener locations.

For future reference: there are four nuts to check, two located under the center interior trim panel and two on the inside of the hatch in the upper corners that DO NOT require the removal of any trim panels but you do need to remove the plastic caps shown in the first picture below. Second and third show the other nuts to check/tighten.

2010 Mazda Shop manual Pages:
09-17-97 for interior trim panel removal
09-16-26 for spoiler removal

Just checked mine in a 4 month old 2013 with 3500 miles. Had an obnoxious cricket noise coming from the back of the car. They weren't in any fear of falling off, but they definitely weren't snug, so I snugged em down and the noise is gone. Thanks for the heads up!

@CWP_MS3 How long did you have yours till you had them fall off? Looks like most here lucked out because of you and checked theirs. Looks like most were just loose and tightened them. But how long till yours fell off?

Fuck em. More than half of those people wouldn't last 10 minutes here anyways. If you stick around long enough, you'll begin to see that.

Outside nuts on mine were tight, but I also only have 195 miles on it

The outsides seemed to pop right off of the center panel, but the center was resisting pulling out (no one likes pulling out), and I didn't want to snap anything off - any recommendations for that panel?

It takes a bit of balls. Just make sure you're not pulling on it from an angle. But yeah, I understand not wanting to tug on the panel. This car seems stout but when my 93 saturn was almost 20 years old, I never failed to break most of the clips holding shit on. LOL

Yup.. Mines a 2012 I bought back in Feb with 8 miles, 24k now and they were a little loose, not to bad though. But definitely was worth the look.

FUUUUUUCK. Checked, missing the outer pass side. Don't hear it though, hopefully it stays nice and wedged where it is. Every bolt was on its last thread, thank god I saw this.

Thanks for the suggestions. Pulling from one side at a time did the trick. All 4 were fine but I gave them a little blue thread lock to make sure they stayed that way

Noticed my wing was loose, searched, saw this, checked last night and I only had the outer left bolt holding my wing on - the two center bolts fell out into my trunk as I pulled the center panel off and had to go fishing for the right one.

Good call on this as it probably saved my wing from flying off on the highway in the very near future.

Glad I saw this a couple weeks ago too. My '13 had 500 miles on it when I checked and the bolts weren't fully tight.

Wow, this is definitely an issue! I've had my car for 3 months now and I guess I should check my spoiler also. I have red locktite which I'll be using. I guess after that they won't come loose again.

So I'm in the market for a new speed and was walking the Mazda lot on a Sunday which is great cause there closed and no annoying salesman talking about a car who doesn't know shit about it.. Anyways I saw this thread a couple weeks back and as I walk around they have about 5 speeds and all the spoilers were loose on brand new cars.. I mean the weren't gonna fall off but you can see the movement...pretty sad that 5 new speeds all had loose spoilers just reminding people to tighten there's and ill be doing the same the same night I buy my 13 speed

I don't think that they were ever meant to be tightened all that hard, but they definitely should have put locktite on them to keep them from falling off.

Bought my 2011 from the dealer I work at three weeks ago and noticed the sound of something sliding each time I opened my hatch. After reading this post I went to check it out. Removed the center trim to access the middle two nuts to find them loose. Also discovered that previous owner had done this since one of the two plastic panel retainers was missing. Then popped the plastic plugs to check the outer ones to find driver side loose and passenger side missing...now I knew what the sliding noise was. Twenty minutes of fishing and I had the runaway nut. Quick trip to parts store for some loctite blue and replacement panel retainer and I'm good to go. No more mystery noise when I open hatch. Thank you so much. I am going to go and donate now because of this.

15k miles, checked mine this week.
The centers were finger tight, the outers were normal. They all got a dab of loctite.
