We will be adding the Head to our site shortly. It will be $984 for the reman head plus a $175 core charge. As of right now, there is a 2 to 3 week lead time on them.

Well the install in my MS6 went well. After sorting out the oil return line issue for the EWG GTX3071 which was the only real snag I ran into during the install, I was able to get the car up and running and got some break in miles on it before delivering it to Texas on Friday to meet up with its new owner.

The final install went smoothly as well as the 14hr drive from Denver to East Texas. For anyone considering getting this engine for themselves, it is about as easy as it gets for coming back from a zzb or similar failure.

If you have any questions, feel free to let me know and I'll be happy to help!

Just wanted to let you guys know that ETA's with this engine are a little bit overestimated typically. When we order one, they give us an ETA of 6 to 8 weeks, but so far every engine we have ordered has shipped from them to us within 10 business days of us placing the order.

My speed only has 20k on it, but I still find it reassuring that the motor can be replaced quickly and somewhat reasonably priced. Thanks for supporting the platform.

Can't you guys keep at least 1of these in inventory all of the time? This option is my ace in the hole. Set up terms with vendor where you just hold their inventory on site and pay on shipment.

A lot of us would sleep better knowing a well rebuilt DISI is only 3-5 days away at any time. That's where the value and beauty of this rebuilt motor is- on demand.

6-8 weeks or even 3 weeks is going to push me in a different direction should the time come. These are our daily drivers.

We could probably do this, however, the problem comes when 3 people buy at once and two have to wait a couple weeks anyways. Thats the problem with inventory in general though... Lol! We once had 3 cp-e cold air intakes sit on a shelf for a year and a half. Then they all sold in the same week.

That's probably a lotta $$$ sitting in inventory that may not move for months...I doubt that would happen. For every one of these they stock, that's probably the value of 25 less expensive products that actually turnover quickly.

Its actually not a bad idea to keep one around though. I'll talk it over with JP and see if we can make it happen.

Doubt they'd keep even 1 in stock. When does the warranty start? I'm guessing it's when you buy the block from the supplier rather than us buying it.

Okay, found out it starts 10 days after the order is placed. That will be the limiting factor in us keeping one in stock...

Yes, there is an option to add an oil pan and valve cover.

I am at the point where I am shopping motor options and my car is down. This guy was definitely an option on my list but I just can't justify using the same OEM parts that failed on me already. Bent rods and cracked ringlands are still a possibility on these at modest power levels using OEM parts.

They really should have picked a modest upgrade for the rods and pistons.

I think there are plenty of other options for buying a built motor (albeit much more expensive in this case).
To have an option for a stock, rebuilt to OEM specification engine at a reasonable price is always good.
I know many people (including myself) who are still just running basic bolt-ons with a proper tune that don't necessarily need to have a built engine.
While this option might not be exactly for you.. it's still a valid option.

Understood. I just assume that if it happens once, it will happen again when they use the same parts. They should at least have used all of the latest parts/revs from Mazda including newer pistons which OP said they didn't.

There's a home for a $4,500 reman option with upgraded pistons/rods rated to ~400WHP between the pure OEM reman and the big build options. My guess is that option would be a good seller here on MSF.

It would be nice if the newer pistons were part of the reman'd long block but that is not up to us unfortunately. However there is an option that you just made me think of.

Providing you have a core...

MZR Reman Head - $1159
+
cp-e Stage 1 Short Block - $2999
----------------------
The makings of a built long block - $4158

Of course you would still need a motor build kit so you are going to be over $5k when all is said and done...

Regardless, the purpose of this Reman Long Block is to provide guys with a relatively quick solution to a bad situation. It comes with everything you need, timed, and ready to install so that you can get back up and running as quickly as possible. The warranty is a huge plus as well!

I got one of these motors and just got it settled in the car tonight. It all came very well packed and was pleasantly surprised to find all the gaskets it comes with. I would like to thank @EdgeAutosport.com; for all the help and recommendations made for this "build". I was wondering according to the ATK install "guide" they say prime the motor with oil, how is that done with our motors or it is even necessary?

You turn the motor over without starting it. Turning the motor over will make the oil pump pump oil through the motor

LOL You had the whole engine out, why didn't you clean the engine bay before going through the trouble of reinstalling the new engine?
That engine bay looks nasty.

I am on a tight time frame as this is my DD and I have to get back to work on Monday. If I had the time I would of loved to scrub everything down.

Just to be 100% clear just cycle the key into the cranking stage a few times then start, or turn crank by hand?

You can either do like Goodrich27 said or there is a tool you can buy to prime it. Its a tank you can put about 4 quarts of oil in. You then pressurize it with air and feed it in where the sensor goes above the filter.

@EdgeAutosport.com;
Did you run into any issues with the motor turning over?

I did but was simply due to having the spark plugs installed. If you want to crank motor by hand first remove spark plugs and have at it, much better option than leaving them in and fighting compression.

I wouldn't think they would have left a timing pin in.
Did you make sure to remove the spark plugs?

I'm in the market for a new motor. ( My MS6 BNR Stage 3 Install )
This looks like a great option!

@EdgeAutosport.com; I have some questions:

1. When adding this to the shopping cart on your site there is no way I see to specify the model year engine I want to order. You mentioned that you received the Gen 1 pistons, but that you also had specified it was for a 2006 car when ordering; is there a way to specify that I want a 2013 spec engine?

2. Along the same line of questioning. The GearheadEngines site says that "wear" items are discarded. I'm hoping the VVT actuator would be classified as a wear item. If Gen 1/random is the only option, can you verify that the VVT system is rebuilt using updated (i.e. post-TSB) parts?

3. Regarding the core refund, what is the time limit for core return?

4. Lastly, I love the 3 year unlimited mile warranty (daily driver MS6 ) and the no fault add-on! In the case of a ZZB , would the additional no-fault warranty be fulfilled by EdgeAutosport, GearheadEngines, or another company?

Thanks!

Thanks!
1. I checked and the part number is the same for all models through them so there is no way to differentiate between engine years. They are all the same in this case. You will likely not be able to get the gen 2 pistons this way...

2. I doubt the reuse the vvt actuator. I can't confirm that but on the one I purchased, it was brand new as were the cams.

3. I don't know that there is a time limit for core return though you probably shouldn't wait too long. I returned my core at the end of July after having purchased the engine in May.

4. Gearhead Engines or ATK Engines will be the ones to fulfill any warranty.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

@EdgeAutosport.com;
You shouldn't have to crank it by hand. To prime it, I believe you just have to floor the gas (which should shut off the injectors) while turning over the engine and it will crank but not start. This will allow it to pump oil pressure with out running the engine dry to start. There shouldn't be any timing pins in that would stop it from rotating.
