Under this definition the 2871 is not intended to rev over the 127k RPM limit on the compressor map and the 2867 is rated to go to 150k RPM due to the forged wheel coupled with smaller diameter or perhaps due to other rotating assembly limits (bearing loading limits and etc).

Of course, one can always overspin either to squeeze some more flow out at the risk of longevity.

Please let me know if you have different information.
For whatever reason all the gtx maps go to 150k rpm. I have heard it a couple ways, Some have it mapped out to the longevity limits, other just map to reasonable efficiency limits under the assumption that, yes the compressor may survive higher rpms, but the efficiency is so low, why bother. Because all the gtx maps are spun out this high, I suspect it is just an efficiency thing.

The critical factors probably have less to do with the smaller diameter and forged wheel, and more to do with the bearings and how precisely the wheels are balanced. Also I bet the gtx wheel is simply more efficient at higher so it makes sense to map it out further.

IMO, a gtx and a gt2871R (ball bearing) should be mechanically able to spin to the same rpms. However when talking about the gt2871 journal bearing unit in my BNR, I bet 127k vs 150k is more reasonable. In the journal bearing, when you exceed the rated rpms, you can push past the shear strength of the oil bearing and get contact between the shaft and the guide, eventually you will wear it down, get shaft play, and oil leaking past it (sound familiar?) ball bearings are much less sensitive to axial loads, probably the leading reliability factor for the ball bearings is temperature.

Dunno if anyone has mentioned this yet. It's an alternative to the ATP turbo inlet. 3" and very nice quality.

I am not a big picture guy (either me or my camera sucks. HAHA), but will snap a couple for you guys.

I know I should get an exhaust manifold, but it wasn't on my list right now.

If I was going to buy one, I think I would go Full race though.

I totally agree. I have a plan and it doesn't exceed 350 whp, but all in usuable form.

I'm pretty excited, although I do need to piece things together.

I posted in the Full Race thread.

Skeurton has me looking @ exhaust manis now. LOL.

Does anyone know what the spool time is on these yet? Is it the same ~300 later than the K04 as the 2871?

Nobody knows for sure yet, but it should be quicker than the 2871 with an equivalent hotside.

Nice! I also realize that the ~300 later number I quoted would depend on A/R, that's just the number I've always heard quoted.

I wish you lived closer too! (no homo). I will definitely give my impessions of the turbo and take some pictures.

I have been trolling your thread, as well as cld12pk2go, ziggo, and skeurton's thread for helpful tips.

I think I may as well get a manifold while everything is going to be apart.

Glad to hear you've put logical and budgetary thinking aside. When it comes to modding, it's best to not think at all.

Will definitely be looking forward to your Pics/install thread/impressions. How long do you think it will be before you get this on the car? Sounds like you might still be collecting some parts (Mani, 3in MAF) so probably not tomorrow, lol.

I am curious as to why you ended up with this turbo vs. the BNR or 3071? All 3 of these so far seem to be a pretty good fit for our motors, each with their own pros and cons. (I realize no one has probably ran the gtx2867 yet, but sounds like it should be comparable to the 2871 only better.) Personally I think the BNR S3 beats this turbo FOR ME based almost solely on the price comparison. Seems like either one shoudl give you an easy 350+ with the BNR allowing use of stock/aftermarket parts I already have and costs a little less to begin with.

Either way, I think you should see really good results and can't wait to see what you are able to do with this.

Dual ball bearing and billet compressor wheel. Faster spool and more flow for future power needs. Not to mention journal bearings wear faster, but they can be rebuilt so I guess its a matter of preference.

@BigjohnB20 Remember you are going to be really hard pressed to make 350awhp on a bnr3 in an ms6. You are really going to have to run that turbo hard to make that power imo

yea, I always forget we are at a disadvantage power wise with the AWD. Of course there are some benefits that come with it as well, lol.

I'm so used to seeing all these 3's putting up great numbers lately and have to remember I can't directly compare to them. I was making the same mistake pouring over the VD thread and wondering why the hell my car wasn't putting up the same numbers as a lot of people in there.

I do have easy access to E85 though and like to think I could squeeze 350ish out of a BNR without gettign too crazy. Either way, I don't even have my DP installed that I bought 6 months ago so its not like I have to worry about a turbo upgrade yet. I just like to live vicariously though all you guys and think one day I will do it.

350 with a touch of e85 is be very do-able. Yes you have to run the turbo to near its limits to do it, but its not like stressing the k04 running 18psi. The operating point at 22psi at redline is still on the compressor map.

I had 383/397 on my GT28(@24 psi, that was maxed out), based on what are you saying the GTX2867 will be maxed out at 350 hp? I take into account different set-up, of course, but I would like to Understand what you mean by this.

Just by reading the compressor map, it is still a 0.6 a/r, and with the aluminum blade it should be
Good for 43-44 lbs/min. Anyways, I plan on pushing this turbo to the limit, so we shall see.

Not sure if it was just me, but the coupler ATP sent was a 45 Deg, 2" to 2"

Most intercooler kits have 2.25" piping so I needed this..

45 (or 90 deg) 2" to 2.25" coupler (Blue is from ATP)

Not to mention the compressor outlet is farther down since the compressor housing is
smaller than the GT2871. It seems like ATP wielded the same outlet as the GT2871. So a longer coupler is generally required anyways.

@rfinkle2 I will post of up some pics as well on Monday when mine finally arrives.. I am very curious to see how this spools as well. I went the simple cheap route... Not sure there is a way with these cars though lol.. But I might put it in this week if the weather is good enough for me to ride..

While not absolutely required, it is highly recommended to get the mani when doing the turbo swap.

Saves mucho work later and helps balance the backpressure/EGT between the cylinders.

Thanks, as always. Looking @ the Full race now, but in the air per coating. I like the black coating, but expect egt's >1600.

Looks as if function>form on this one.

Are you going to be measuring EGT's?

During the turbo swap is the perfect time to tap the Ex mani...

I would be very interested in seeing how much more choked up the smaller hot side is as indicated by the EGT...

I was contemplating it. I'm going to talk to Eric about having Full Race weld a bung in for me.
