Yup, reservoir is one of the main considerations. Not sure if it can be relocated easily or not. But i'll probably just keep the turbo a bit more towards the pass side.

I played around with the CAD drawing last night and I think I can make a nice top mount CNC'd manifold if there is enough interest. It wouldn't be a twin scroll but should still work very well and be divided left to right to direct the flow straight into the turbo.

Lean, i'd love to see the drawings! Can you post up some screen shots so we can check em out?

Also, i remember you offered to build a tubular mani at one point, and i'd honestly prefer my top mount to be tube. Plus if you use a flange setup like i've been suggesting, the tubes wouldn't have to support much of the weight at all, basically just direct flow.

I know it's more work, but it's kinda what i'd prefer. Plus then you can intentionally make runners 1 & 3 longer to induce some bubbly sound for other wanna be subie's like me

I have the passages worked out for one side

Seems like you guys are placing the turbo flange in line with the second passage from the right when standing in front of the car so I designed it like that. Right now the turbo flange is parralell with the head but do you guys need it on an angle?

Still working at it! I'll show you later.

From what i've gathered, SU mark has the best lateral placement, more towards the passenger side than the others, which gives the most room for the intake to clear the brake fluid reservoir. So i would vote for left of center placement when looking from front of the car (pass side).

Also, all the turbo flanges seem to be kicked up at an angle, like slanting down towards the front of the car.

Can't wait to see your renderings! Hopefully your bandaids look better than mine

and weld fail. he didnt jig the head or turbo flange, just clamped em to a plate and they warped pretty good. fuck my life. good thing i know a guy who will cnc shit for the cost of beer so he'll be millin it flat. hopefully it'll work out. if not i guess buy another flange and have him cut and reweld the right way this time

all i have is a shitty cell pic showin the gap between my counter and the head flange now. it was fine when i bought it from kurt, i just wanted to make sure the welds would hold good. but no jig and stainless steel= warped warped warped. probably off by 1/4" from the passenger side to the far drivers side area of the flange now, and the turbo flange bowed out alot too. might be able to heat the head flange and push it back into place and then mil some of it. if i cant fix it im takin it as a sign that this car is ready to go somewhere else. ill sell it, take the loss on the motor and shit and get some unmoddable economy work car. im fuckin done with this piece of shit

Do you think a couple heat cycles and torqueing the nuts a few times will fix it? Too far of a stretch? Sucks to try it and not have it work. Bummer. Good luck!

If it's mild steel, this will actually work. Hard part will be getting it on the head in the first place, cause the holes may not line up with that much warp. 1/4" is a lot, but not impossible IMO.

Put a magnet on the flange, if it sticks, it's mild steel and you should at least try.

I'd be inclined to take it to a heat treater and get him to cook the shit out of it to relieve the stress and then try to bend it flatter and then machine it flat.

How hot do you have to get a mani to relieve the stress? I want to heat treat mine and i have an oven i use for powder coating, but i'm not sure 500 degrees would really be enough....

i stuck a magnet on there when i first got it and the only place it stuck was at the vband for the ewg, otherwise it didn tstick to any level that i could feel anywhere else. its been a shitty day so my outlook on everything is a bit grim right now. the cnc guy can probably make it work he said but then its a matter of will the turbo clear the block still. most likely not, especially with losin some material at the head flange. fuckin fuck

while it sucks that it happened, im not quite sure why you thought it was a good idea to go over all the other welds on the manifold. it was brand new. my guess is you were worried about a china manifold cracking. chances are that would happen because they'd use a thinner gauge tube, not necessarily crappy welds. i held that manifold in my own two hands and it looked halfway decent. not any better or worse than my DNP, which held up just fine.

yeah they werent bad, but i just didnt wanna have to deal with cracks, china welds or not, so i reinforced em. should be able to weld a jig onto a table and heat the mani while torque'n some bolts onto the jig studs and flatten it out. ill make it work one way or another. but enough thread jackin, back to dustins mani ideas

Yeah either way it was a terrible decision, but I know what its like to have multiple things go wrong at one time... or in a row. I have a production RR mani and it looks Damn good to me.. just because RR's business practices sucked balls, their wells aren't half bad.

I might be able to get a prototype done before I shut down the shop in mid August. Won't be able to do a production run till I get the new shop up and running though. Lokking forward to the new shop though as I will have all new equipment and a robotic welder.

I want a robotic welder.....

but i'll just have to settle for a mostly drunk / hung over amateur welder for now...


Leen, i'm seriously stoked to see what you end up making. Top mount seems to offer so many advantages over stock placement, and i think anyone who's deciding to go big turbo and not afraid of some custom work (which is a surprising number of people in our platform ) will definitely suit up with a production unit. Especially if it has your quality.

Even if no down pipe is offered, as in a kit or something.. getting a custom down pipe fabbed by a local shop really isn't all that expensive IMO. And it's certainly not that hard to do.


I have marco's mani right now, so i'll take it to work tomorrow and get some quotes from some local machine shops for my head / turbo flanges. I also just filled up my argon, so all i'll soon need is my spare assembled long block to use as a jig.

Leen, if you happen to not have your design finalized by then, i'll happily take pictures and stuff of how mine ends up. But my guess is you'll probably have a beta before i'm finished.... in which case i'll be begging to beta test lol.

I always hated the stock location as its a PITA to make a manifold using my method when the flange is above the ports like the stock manifold. Top mount is the best way for sure to get best flow and easy access.
