EdgeAutosport shop car goes BT!!

So this weekend we had originally planned to install the CPE manifold on the shop car. We pulled the stock manifold without any problems and went to install the CPE manifold and we quickly found out we couldn't fit the manifold back there. So we went ahead and removed the cowl to give us some more room to work with. We orginally planned on sticking with the k04 on this install but after the hassle to get the manifold back there we just ended up saying lets put the bt back there since installing the manifold was not an easy task.

After all the cowl was removed we will still couldn't get the manifold back there. We then took some pliers and bend parts of the cowl up to give us even more room to get that manifold back there. Still no luck, so we removed the rmm bolt and put the jack under the motor and jacked it up so it would flex the motor forward to get the manifold in and sure enough that was the right combination to get that manifold on the manifold studs.

After dropping the manifold back there we realized the nuts that that attach the manifold to the turbo wont screw on the studs because they were too big and running into the runners. We went out and bought some m10x1.50 allen cap bolts to try and clear the runners. After screwing with it for a while the manifold holes weren't matching up with the turbo. We took off the turbo bracket to give us some play to move the turbo around to line up with the manifold and get them threaded correctly and not at an angle to clear the runners.

After much deliberation of keeping the stock turbo back there to do some manifold testing of several different manifolds available to us and after the hassle to get the manifold back there we just ended up saying lets put the bt in since installing the manifold was not an easy task. On to pictures and comments of what we had to do to get this set up to work.


Here is what is going in the car at the start of the day


Got all the lines attached to the new turbo. This is the coolant hard line you reuse from the k04 that has to be bent to fit. Make sure a prep the turbo and by prep I mean hook up all the lines prior to installing it.


Side by side comparison stock/cpe

Clamp your coolant lines before you pull your k04 so coolant does go every where.


Now drop in the new turbo and put all four studs in prior to get the manifold to line up correctly. You can gently rest the turbo back there it will sit back there on plenty of stuff without being held up by hand. This pic shows it attached with the oil drain connected.

This was the clearance issue we had with the cpe manifold. To get it to clear you have to rock the motor. (rmm removed)

Here is another one of me pointing out where we were hitting the fire wall.

Once the manifold is in had tighten the nuts but if the stud is to far up the nut wont go over the stud so you have to lower the pull the turbo up by tightening the studs.

To get to these nuts you will need a stubby 15mm.

Next is hooking up the oil/coolant lines. Here is a picture of the oil feed without the bolt in it.

This bolt is a pain in the ass to get in sometimes so a small trick is take you 9/16 short socket and fill it with paper towels almost all the way to the top. This will help from letting that banjo bolt slide up in the socket and make it more difficult to get that bolt started.

Dont forget to put one washer below the oil feed and one on top. You can take a screw driver slide the crush washer on it and use it as a guide to get it to slide down onto the turbo cause there is very little room to use your hands. Here is a picture with the oil feed installed.

One thing on the cpe mani with the ewg runner it blocks the first 02 bung so we opted to use the second one to house the 02 sensor. This picture shows where the original bung was plugged. We just reversed them.

After the turbo was in connect the coolant feed to the egr.

Next up was going to do the ewg setup at the bottom of the car. Attach the low profile elbow before the turbo goes in the car but dont tighten it as you have to move it around to pass the dp. This low profile is only needed with cpe down pipes as they have a different design.

Next take apart your ewg and put the correct springs to achieve desired spring pressure. All done plug all your holes that you dont need. We opted for the spring combo of 17.4. You can find the spring chart on tial.com

Attach the ewg to the low profile in the car. To get it to clear it will look something like this.

after that clamp the dump tube to the ewg this is running out the bottom of the car.

Its very clear it was designed for the v band turbo set-up. It can be done with the mazda flange it just requires a little more finesse

Its really not that bad but when you remove that center bolt in the rmm it does wonders to get it to fit. Its acutally really easy after that.

That turbo bracket wont fit with the ewg setup so we just left it out. With big turbo you have to modify it anyway to get it to fit correctly

Manifold wasent the issue...well kinda.. sanding down the EWG bungs was a bitch... so was bending that damn coolant hard line... lol

The next time you guys do a manifold install take the manifold studs out. I think it is a torx 8-10 can't remember and then change them to bolts this way when you lift the manifold up you dont have to push it towards the firewall first then up. That way you dont bend or cut up the cowl doing any of this.

If you dont want to pull the studs then you can just pull the RMM and the Passenger side mount (the bolts that bolt it to the body only) and slide the motor forward and you can get the manifold out that way. Good luck on your install. I am really thinking about selling my steedspeed top mount to get the CPE manifold but i have heard nothing but horror stories for the install so far..

Honestly get another bung welded in down stream where the dp isnt cast which would be my recommendation. If thats not an option get a full race manifold

Understood and that would have worked as well. I dont think you really have to bend the cowl like we did it just kinda happened that way. Once the rmm bolt was removed the manifold slipped right in after we put the jack under there to help us flex the motor.

Your talking about the one that attaches to the turbo? That one is very very easy he is talking about the big coolant line that has to be bent for t3 setups.

Full race is 1100 that's ridiculous. Even of its still 900 that's crazy. I know it great but its still able to get cracks especially with a ewg gtx30. Fuckin CPE. I already bought a ton of there shit now I have to modify there own dp or just get a different manifold

I was talking about the big coolant line that runs over the transmission. Not the lines off the turbo. My turbo sat so low that I couldnt fit my 3.5 inch intake on without bending the coolant that runs to the firewall.
