BFG aint fer me

Recently, after a 5 hour drive to and from Austin, I can say that maybe the Sport Comp 2's were not the best tire for me. I do a lot of highway driving, have passengers regularly and do not track the car at all. The BFG's are great in the dry and very stable in the wet but their sacrifice in road noise and comfort is not something I can live with, especially knowing there are many more road trips in my future.

So, due to budget constraints my choices are

Hankook V12 $362, Hankook S1 $367, Kumho Ecsta 4X II $349, and finally Firehawk Indy 500 $325. Which set will have a noticeable difference in terms of ride/noise and treadwear?

Get a Michelin tyre if you want grip and comfort. The pilot supersports are as good as a decent road tyre can get.

A friend of mine had the Firehawk Indy 500 on his speed, no complaints. They seem to be holding up fairly well to some decently aggressive driving around town. I've been in the car a few times with him and didn't notice much in terms of road noise, although I've also never been on a trip in his car and that's really the only time you would notice a lot of road noise. As far as the others, I'm not sure. Supersports are great...and expensive.

That's odd. I experienced minimal to no extra road noise from my Sport Comp 2's.

I've had the Firehawk wide oval indy 500 on my speed3 for roughly the last 30K. They do last quite a while even with some occasional abuse. I will say though that their performance in even slightly cooler (below 50) weather is pretty lack luster.

For road noise they are pretty decent until you get to about half their tread life and they get pretty loud, wet performance is pretty average but dry (warm) performance is pretty darn good for a cheap street tire. FWIW they are pretty good deal but if you can spend more it will yield a better experience.

I guess compared to my older Kumho's they had additional noise and rode stiffer. I mean they're not bad for short rides but on long drives they're pretty annoying.

Unfortunately my budget is $400. If I could get some PSS for that I definitely would but as of right now I'm just utilizing the rebates the manufacturers have going.

+1 for the Indy 500 got them off tire rack for 450 few months back. Good budget tires with traction look up there review/track test on tire rack. Just to be clear these are the Indy 500 not wide oval Indy 500. Also the wife dailys the speed with my 2 kids back and forth to school with these on and no complaint about road noise.

So one trick to get some nice tires at a low cost is to check out ebay. every once and a while discount tire will offer some pretty decent discounts. I got 4 245/40/18 Michelin PSS shipped to my door for $600. Still not as affordable as the Firestone tires but they'll feel so nice (assuming I ever get my evo wheels back from powder coating).
