Default Need some help wiring up backup camera for my D5151

Hey guys,

So I've been running the D5151 in my 08 Mazdaspeed 3 for a few months now, working great. Decided I will get a backup camera for this unit. I picked up a generic Mazda 3 camera from ebay (pictured). I am a little bit confused with all of the red power wires on the yellow video cable. Anyway here is what I plan to do. Let me know if I am on track.

I will not use both red wires on the yellow video wire (not needed because D5151 supports automatic camera activation via canbus. I will run the yellow RCA cable along lower passenger side and plug into the rca plug at the back of the D5151. For the other power wire I will find a ground spot on the body for the black wire, and for the red wire I will connect it to the wire that powers the backup lights.

Sound about right?

Sounds about right. In my old Mazda3 sedan, there was a wire harness right above the scissor jack area. I don't know if it is the same for the Mazdaspeed though.

What you can do also is tap the RED wire on the RCA to the 12V reverse switch on the radio harness if you can find it. Then splice the other end of the RED wire to the camera power. That way you only need to find a ground point.

Ok, I didn't realize there was continuity between the red wires on the Yellow rca cable. I'm pretty sure the D5151 doesn't have a +12v reverse switch, it only has a rca backup camera hookup (i'll have to double check though). If I tap into say the cigarette lighter for 12v, will the camera be powered on all the time?

Yeah it is continuous. It was meant for the older models where you tap that to a signal wire on the back of the headunit, that way it auto-switches to the reverse cam. I just looked at the wiring diagram and it doesn't seem to have a reverse signal.

You don't want to tap the cig lighter, the cam will be on all the time.

When I installed my D5151 with the backup cam I had to run the wires up under the headliner and down the trunk to the reverse lights. I'm not sure if this was necessary but it worked.

Originally I tapped the cigarette lighter but it would show the backup all the time.

I think i'll try finding the reverse light wire that comes off the pjb. It's supposed to be a green/black wire (from here Reminder... where to locate the reverse indicator wire on Mazda3 - Mazda3 Forums : The #1 Mazda 3 Forum). I have the pjb connector pinout as well so I should be able to figure it out.

I know this is super old,

but was it the Green\black wire by the PJB?
In the process of doing this myself.
