This has to be one of the most useful, helpful posts in the history of automotive forums. I cannot tell you how many times I have tried to explain to people how turbos (and intercoolers, and wastegates, and BOV/BPV's) work. Tough to do with a cocktail napkin & a ball point pen. Thanks for taking the time to put it together in a concise & clear manner.

I just bought my 2010 Mazda Speed 3 today. I have no idea how to treat this mechanical beauty or give it the respect it deserves. This thread help in understanding all the effort and enginering to create such a wonderful exerience of operating a tubo charged vehicle. Thanks for the helpful info, and sorry about my awful spelling!

Man, That's great information posted here. This is my first car with turbo, the others were NA, and I always like the idea to have one . The MS6 is great. With your explanation i can clearly understand everything related to turbos. The videos speaks by themselves.

Many thanks.

maybe write about if it is necessary to let the car idle after hard driving before turning it off. I have read that our turbos K04 are water cooled so this isn't necessary? If you could clear that up it would be AMAZING!!

great write up!!

was wondering if we could get info on how boost gauges work, where they install, as well as what a wideband gauge is... thanks!

Wow being that the MS3 is my first turbo now I feel much more comfortable about what is really under the hood. I did know to let the car idle for about 30 secs or more depending on how I drive it. Great Info!!

Hmm.. I'm a bit worried now! I just installed a SRI the other day and I've noticed that when I let off the gas I hear that compressor surge sound!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Could this have been happening with the stock air box and I just couldn't hear it??? What should I do? I have a TurboXS RFL bov, so perhaps I should experiment with the washers in it to see if the sound will go away? I'm thinking there are too many washers in it so it's not venting the compressed air early enough. Please some one help! Until I saw the video in this write up I figured my SRI was just wobbling and that was the noise I heard

On a good note, this is an amazing write up!

You are likely hearing the bpv sound, or bypass flutter, rather than compressor surge.

Opening up the intake with a sri allows the sound of the bpv to be more audible.
