Default over boost

I am working on a custom tune with christian at cobb for my ms6 that is fully bolted with a pt performance sst turbo. After doing the logs we are seeing boost above 22 psi with the wgdc at 0. Christian is suggesting I add a cat to my catless down pipe or drill out the restrictor pill.
I don't want to add a cat unless I have to because it just seems like a backwards thing to do to control boost. I guess what I asking is if there is another way around the boost problems like adding an external gate? Any suggestions? Thanks

You could do an external gate, but drilling the restrictor out would probably work.

Trust me, you want control man. The drilled out pill will basically allow more boost to press against your waste gate spring. Cobb suggests .042 - .060" for big turbos IIRC. You could prob drill yours out to like 0.05" or so. Don't go too big though, otherwise you'll have a hard time bleeding enough air through your solenoid to actually build boost. Just do a little bit at a time.

Somewhere on cobb's site there is a paper about how mazda controls boost, it talks about the effects of drilling the pill out.

You could just get off the silly stock control and go with a real boost controller?

Now before I get flammed let me explain. Why would you try to use the stock controller and the pill mod if your not on a stock turbo? There are enough problems with the set up that you shouldn't have to start drilling on the turbo. Not only that but you cannot take the cover off your turbo (sealer holds it on) so you will have to drill the pill and let the shavings fall down into the compressor cover, not good.

Pull it away from the stock controll and solenoid and you will see that the turbo really wakes up and there is 250 RPM of additional spool time that you pick up. The stock control is great for the stock turbo, get a quality EBC or MBC and tune it with one of those. You will be much happier later on with the results and your turbo will run better as well.

Nothing yet, I think he swapped over to a MBC to control the boost. Other then that I think they got the problem worked out. I just wish we could get some high boost numbers from the SST on a dyno. I know it has 350 WHP in the turbo.

Actually I am still running the boost off of the factory control right now. I am going to use a bracket to hold the wastegate shut and then go ewg with the steedspeed mani. The gate is at my doorstep and the mani should ship out tomorrow I think. Once it is all on I will be finishing my tune with christian and heading to the dyno.

Little off topic but the closest awd dyno around me is a dynopack...anyone know how they read? Thanks.

Dynapack is the highest reading dyno.

It measures power from the hub.
