Default Headlight Velocity Stack Mod

Intake Air Temps have always been an issue with my car. Normally they are ~20* F or above Actual Air Temps. To lower IATs for track days I would usually remove the driver side headlight. I got tired of this. I thought of trying to route my intake in a way to pull in cold air but a FMIC and windshield washer relocation made this impossible. Packed engine bay is packed. There were only a couple options left. Fabricate some ducting that would route air from the front grille or punch a hole in the headlight. The headlight option was more realistic. It took me some time to find the time and spare headlight. Anyways here is what I did.

Ordered parts from @SPEEDPERF6RMANC3; thanks to @superskaterxes;
4" velocity stack
4" x 1' coupler
4" clamp


Tools needed:
4.25" hole saw - 3 Piece Large Diameter Bi-metal Hole Saw Set
drum sander attached to cordless drill - 4 Piece Quick Change Sanding Drum Set
plyers - used for breaking off some of the plastic
Drill
Air compressor with blower nozzle attachment

No need to bake the headlight. Just find the center of the high beam and drill a hole making sure the hole will be level and perpendicular to the front of your car. User your pliers to break off pieced of plastic that get in your way...or drill straight through it. On the back side you will do essentially the same thing but you need to break away the plastic wire harness so it stays in tact. Once the harness is detached from the housing you can tuck it inside the headlight housing to prevent damage from the drilling.

This is what it looks like after using the 4" hole saw.

Next it's time for the 4.25" hole saw. This is the hard part because it barely clears the inside plastic housing of the headlight. Use the drum sander to clean up your edges and to make adjustments. After you have test fitted the 4" x 1' coupler and everything looks right, clean up the headlight. Working with plastic is messy and there are lots pockets for debris to get trapped inside the headlight. If I had to do this over again I would have tapped off the inside area of the headlight to minimized dust and plastic shavings from entering other areas. Don't attach the velocity stack until the head light is on the car because the bumper won't fit.

IATs are about 10-15*F lower on average while driving at speed of 25 mph +. Looks a little goofy but works!

What I haven't done yet is seal the headlight. I plan on buying some clear silicone adhesive. Maybe this stuff...

I would just go ahead and glass it in. Something like these-




Unless its hooked directly to the intake I would venture to say that the velocity stack probably isn't doing all that much above what just a headlight modified like the above headlights would do.

The theory is that the velocity stack is gathering more air than if I was to glass it in. It will also reduce turbulence.

That was my original plan but no. I think just having the air dumping into the engine bay right in front of the intake is good enough. I can take pics tonight to show you.

If it's not hooked directly to intake, then I don't see how having less turbulence will be beneficial, since the filter will just mitigate the effect of the stack.
I like the idea a lot, but think glassed in would be cleaner and server the same function.

more turbulence = less air making its way into the engine bay. The VS focuses the air. But hey I might still attach a filter on the end of this thing and make a custom intake lol

if the VS is directed right at the filter it will help straighten the air to be focused right around the filter vs. just shooting cold air all over the engine bay

Turbulence isn't always a bad thing and as has been said is mitigated by not being connected directly to the intake.

I'd do mesh right behind the headlight for large particles and then an inline filter behind it and plumb it right into the intake.

Why not do some testing? It would be simple to do 5 tests to watch the effects:

1) closed headlight with your normal intake setup
2) open headlight no vs normal intake setup
3) open headlight with vs and normal intake setup
4) open headlight no vs with direct hookup to intake pipe
5) open headlight with vs with direct hookup to intake pipe

Because right now, that shit screams rice without a shred of evidence to suggest that it produces additional power. I think it's a cool idea if it works, though!

I can do some legit testing in a couple weeks when I get back from travel. 0 fucks given about looks. This is only for the track. I was fearful of being pulled over and of driving home from the track with one headlight. Also, it was time to try something new.

Please attach it to the intake next. I feel like it'll help a lot at high speed - true ram-air type thing going on.

inline air filter? If not carefully done id see if wreaking havoc on a Maf sensor, but hell, could very well be awesome.

I feel like if I got drunk and I walked by your car I'd probably pee in that.

Honestly, its pretty cool. That is some cold high pressure air, it would be great if you could devise a way to couple that through an inline filter and the MAF body.

You do realize that cork sport sells a fmic system that does this without being externally obvious? My IATs are almost always within a couple degrees of ambient.
