Ha, let's not start that in this thread! I guess that price seems to be about what I'd expect. Personally I wouldn't pay that much, but I don't think CPE's aiming for the "budget tuner" market.

This is a pretty funny statement actually. Most people aren't aware that cobb is outsourcing almost all their work now, including the FMIC. They were actually going with a popular/unpopular companies product, until cobb decided it wasn't at the price point they wanted, so they swapped to a manufacturer with cheaper labor/parts to cut costs.

Does anyone know the company that supposedly "bought" cobb at sema?

you gotta admit, these numbers are AWESOME. 82% efficiency with only a 2psi drop? That is awesome... i doubt that any other manufacturer can claim that... plus the other benefits, like using proper sized tubing, new rad. tube, PS cooler, and being able to keep the underbelly trays on.... this is without a doubt a properly engineered kit. I doubt any other manufacturers will be able to claim all of this. I doubt they will even be able to claim 82% with only a 2psi drop... that is amazing. Anyone can slap an IC on a car, but if you want a properly engineered one, expect to pay a pretty penny for it.

and to answer the cobb question, MSD bought 49% of cobb. They do outsource all of their work, and the majority of it goes overseas. Expect to pay more if your having an american making your parts, vs. a 12 yr old with a TIG gun.

Well thats the point really. You don't tend to outsource to get quality work done, you do it to cut costs and bring the product to the consumer at a lesser cost. You really need alot of QC on outsourced work, which doesn't seem to really happen these days.

Of course if you were outsourcing to someone like kooks for pipe work, that's a different story.

Case in point, check out all the recent problems with the TurboXS welds on their pipes.

Granted the manufacturing process and QA itself is a important portion of the design cycle. But I'd say that as long as the engineering and design was done properly and the materials and such used in the manufacturing were accounted for, there's nothing wrong with having an overseas manufacturing plant do the actual assembly. It's when they cut corners on manufacturing and QA where you get problems with overseas goods. Most American companies work hard to protect their brand which generally involves inspecting overseas manufactured goods for any cut corners. Cobb, for example, isn't going to release a potentially reputation damaging product into the marketplace regardless of who actually manufactured it.

i hope some of you guys work in a field where you can lose your job because of those 12 year olds... buy shit from over there, and you are supporting everything else that is going on over there. i happen to like getting paid what i deserve, and having health benefits.

that being said, there is a lot more to the cost other than americans making the shit. think about the engineering that goes into it... no doubt there is TONS of work that went into designing such a kit. any garage engineer can design a couple tubes and get an ebay IC, and it will work. but that doesn't mean it's the best solution. if you want the best, you gotta pay. i think they did a fine job coming up with the best solution. their attention to detail cannot be matched. they give you everything you need, and install is a breeze. they give you new PS cooler and rad. tube, because they knew that would be a problem. who else is doing this? that has to be added into the cost.

also, LOOK AT THOSE NUMBERS! anyone that knows what the fuck they are talking about cannot say that those numbers are average... they are spectacular. your ebay IC could only dream of that efficiency and pressure drop. and no lag! this FMIC is ready for whatever you are going to throw at it.

heres the kits so far..and my take

begi...... too small, but nice, clean kit... id take it over everything else at this point
corksport..... gimmicky, dont want it, MAF and manifold issues
txs.....ricer big, manifold issues, laggy as hell
atp.... will not go on with mani, pipes are longer than the car
cobb..... might be an option in 2011

and now
cpe.... its got every problem above worked out. Its got a ton of r&d, im confident of the performance. Piping, hoses look awesome... and the routing is what im looking for....

but the goddam thing isnt centered in the front grill?!?

Oh well... all the issues with the others were functional issues. The cpe ic is strictly to do with overcoming my behemoth ego, and buying a cockeyed intercooler that will make may car go faster, but faster and pull to the left...lol.

Just put some black mesh over the entire front of the FMIC and you shouldn't see the cockeyedness...

Ya I was actually going to ask if any companies made a slightly more dense black mesh replacement for the lower grill piece. Provide some additional protection and help hide the FMIC...I'd rather people not know I had one...it's one of the reasons I like the MS3 so much, it blends in rather nicely.

You can also just use black radiator paint on the FMIC front right?

i'm more of a function dude... i put priority on how it performs over how it looks... so it pulled to the side a little does not bother me, especially if you slap some paint on it you'll never know.

if cp-e was smart, they would have priced this kit more competitively. sell this thing for ~$850 or something, and they would sell like hotcakes. hell, i'd even buy one, and i'm more in favor of TMIC so far.

at this rate, they might as well spray paint a stencil that says AutoEXE on the core, those prices remind me of the old greddy RSPL cores they used to sell back in the day LOL, before ebay haha.

yup, pretty much. While a lower price with equal quality would always be good for us the consumer, they put a lot of time and money into properly R&Ding the thing... I figure they'll take shit from people for being priced the way it is, and being off center but meh, the numbers plain kick ass.

Id cut that damn bumper in half, buy an autoexe or do whatever the hell i needed if the thing could have been centered. Im anal as hell about stuff like that.
