Default ATP/Garrett Hate - failure GTX3076

So, the bearings went out on my GTX3076R. Used the ATP kid as provided in terms of oil lines.

Send the turbo in to ATP last week. Verdict is there was a "clog" of some sort in the oil feed portion of the turbo just before the bearings preventing oil from getting in. Garrett called it a user-induced failure, won't cover it.

ATP says there really wasn't anything I could have done to prevent it, says it's a one-in-a-million failure, but says Garrett won't cover it, and they won't eat it.

So, I'm basically out $742 to get a new CHRA because of a failure I could not have prevented on a turbo Garrett is not warrantying.

Anyone care to call ATP telling them to warranty that shit for me?

I straight up asked, "So understanding that this isn't garrett's fault, but at the same time there was nothing I could do to prevent it, Garrrett won't eat this as a customer service exception?" "the best they'll do is this CHRA exchange program for $742".

Well the right thing to do is for ATP to eat the cost. Just when i thought ATP turned the corner, they pull this.

Personally, i can no longer recommend using ATP turbos if they can't even be loyal. ATP, go learn about how Cobb does business.... Customer loyalty is essential.

If anyone knows ATPs FB page and Twiter, they need to be directed to this page.

@RayRay had a similar issue.

@cld12pk2go, @NJSPEED3, @atvfreek, @ everyone interested....

The more I read about the gtx ball bearing turbos, the more I think we need to be running an oil restrictor.

Garrett recommends it.

@chimmike, we can get enough people together in this thread to show ATP how much business they do through this forum.

TBH, we don't need them considering their "drop in" oil and water feed kits are not correctly sized anyway.

speaking of that, this wasn't restrictor-related. I had a long talk iwth the guy about restrictors, and he claims they aren't necessary, and that if you push too much oil and get blowby at the seals, you can add a restrictor and it won't leak anymore, that the seals are metal like pistons rings and not rubber that can blow out.

This was more like "some shit in your oil clogged up the inlet, not our fault" but something I could have prevented how? And I'm within the 1 year warranty but no coverage?

2 failures with properly maintained cars is suspect.

In any case, their kits are poop, imo..

And if poop, they should @ least stand behind them.

Technically it is not ATP's kit failing it is garrett's chra that failed, all atp does is slap their bolt on turbine housing onto it ....IDK I think it should be garret who eats the loss.

Most definitely not you.....what exactly could have caused the feed to plug?

FYI the gtx uses the same exact bearing/shaft set-up as the gt series, the billet wheel distinguishes the 2 apart, being the case every bb garret tc I have used required a restrictor, they need/use minimal oil...........but this failure doesn't sound like it has anything to do with having too much......more like not enough.

To the best of my knowledge the seals are exactly like a piston ring, they are designed to weep to relieve pressure beyond something like 40psi, but that doesn't mean they have failed, usually something like a pinched oil return line causes back pressure.

Ultimately Garret should cover it, however... ATP modified the turbo to make it Mazda compatible. Therefore, the responsibility lies on them.

ATP should have no issues getting Garret to cover that turbo from them with as many turbos as ATP sells for them. This shit isn't making any sense. This is why im thinking this is ATP knowing they fucked up on the oil return like or something.

So that threaded aluminum piece that sits inside where the oil feed line is not an oil restrictor? I might have to look into this..

I won't shit up Chimmikes thread, but have been looking into the size needed etc. and with info from Garrett's site, am sketchy as to if these new gtx's will have issues with the stock feed line.

I believe Bluestreak thinks the excessively long drain line they supply with the kit is the culprit.

Yep. My line was kinked and I'm sure it caused the oil to back up. At this point, I'm kinda nervous about my second one failing so I ordered this oil restrictor for testing. Nuts to ATP saying we don't need one.

I don't understand? I've been running a restrictor since I installed my GTX? The same restricor I use to run on my GT3071, was I not supposed to? I figured since they made the claim that its was drop in interchangeable that meant it needed it?

No @Etipp98 ATP tells me with the stock feed line, and even with -4an, a restrictor is not necessary on our cars.

Anyone care to call ATP and push them for me?

@rfinkle2 : the only difference between these and regular GT's is the compressor wheel/housing. The CHRA/shaft/turbine wheel/housing is the same.

@RayRay had been having a bunch of problems with his GTX3076.

I run a restrictor on my GT3582 but it isnt GTX.. I also have a custom oil feed setup with AN fitings and such.

I thing Garrett is to blame...they made the CHRA which is where the failure occurred. ATP only adds a hotside, drain line and coupler to the mix so they never touch the CHRA oil feed.

I have a GTX3071 on the way and will compare the CHRA to my GT28.

AFAIK absolutely no restrictor needed and in-fact will likely destroy the CHRA.

Do not use an oil restrictor.
That's how I blew the bearings on my GTX3071.
OP's problem was lack of lube oil not an abundance of it.
The GTX CHRA is both water AND oil cooled. You will starve the bearings of oil that it needs for colling if you put a restrictor in the oil inlet.

Had the same issue with ATP. Had to buy the CHRA. It hurts but what the fuck can one do. I keep hoping a reputable company will start making single wastegate twin scroll manifolds for this platform with corresponding V band DPs but don't have much hope that will ever happen.

I just changed my wishlist to the EFR from the 3582. That's just crazy they aren't eating it to make it right.

Unless of course they have, and I didn't reach that far yet...

1) post their information, facebook, etc in post 1.
2) mods here need a vendor master list made of untrustworthy vendors, add it to the new member section as a sticky to guide people in the right direction. Obvious to us, msf vendors > non vendors by a mile.

Fuck this shit I'm pissed.

I saw the vid that showed play from side to side. But how would that react in the car?

I blame ATP for not trying harder to get Garrett to cover the warranty. Seems like they just half ass customer care....

Sorry mike!

Yeah, they seemed pretty un-receptive to even considering shit and said garrett already made the ruling.

Garret would not give 2 shits if ATP ever bought from them again.
Honeywell sells literally tens of thousands of turbos a year. Most of them bigger than the 30 and 35 frame. If ATP never bought from them again they would hardly notice it.

Best bet is to take Garrett to small claims court in your state if you have the time and patience to fight it for $750. Florida has a min claim requirement of $500 but other states are higher. They would probably not send a lawyer to represent them for that value and would settle by giving you a free CHRA. That's just a guess however.

But they know the majority of us don't have the time to do that.

If it wasn't a matter of changing the manifold flange and fucking with the downpipe, I'd consider switching to a different brand turbo. but that's money I don't have, either.

I have an idea how about everyone gets off this stock frame turbo craze, and buys a true garret turbo.

Problem solved. ATP kiss our ass, haha.

Of course not. I'm here in FL and they're in CA.

It costs around $200-250 to file a small claim here in FL, IIRC. my money is better spent on other things right now.
