Default 2006 MS6.. will a new Intake require an ECU mapping to richen up the mixture?

I just got a 2006 MS6 Grand Touring, 29k miles, completely stock and was looking to do something to add a little more power, maybe make it sound better.... so I was thinking of doing an intake.... most likely a Short Ram Intake from either Cobb or the CPE Xcel Nano..

I talked to a mechanic about doing this and they said that if you ONLY put on an intake into a completely otherwise stock car that this could be very bad for the engine.. he said the reason being is that a new intake will provide much more air (better breathing) to the engine, thus leaning out the fuel/air mixture and making the engine possible run too hot, pre-detonate, knocking etc. etc.... which he said will lead to premature engine failure. He said that if you do just an intake that you really should do an ECU remapping so that you can richen up the fuel mixture now that you are increasing the amount of air intake...

does this sound correct? being that this car is practically like brand new... very low miles and hardly ever driven hard (a woman owned it prior).. plus the car is still under factory warranty until the end of the year.. I really don't want to do anything that could hurt the engine or any other parts on the car. I plan on keeping this car for a very long time and expect it to run me 150K plus miles with no trouble.. I really don't want to burn out the turbo or engine premature.

thanks all!

My advice to you. If you have never modified a car, dont modify this one. Those mechanics were correct. Although i dont think it will do too much, it will allow more air to come into to your motor. But the ecu will take this into account and change your LTFTs. (you may not understand what im saying, but with just an intake youd be okay.) But if your mechanically inclined, Intake, + turbo inlet pipe + Cobb ap will make the car a totally different vehicle. Cobb ap is a tuner, hooks into the OBDII port, and can flash your car. (however i dont recommend just running the maps cobb provides).

OP,
This may seem like a lot, so just do some googling, or surfing on MSF. There are deff a few basic bolt on mods you can do to really open the car up.

O and gratz on the MS6. Its the same color as mine =]

BTW
If you cant take a joke, or just cant stand non-PC(politically correct) talk. stay outta the shout box.
AND GOOD DAY

well I mainly don't want to screw anything up because I want this car to last me a long time. I would just like a litlte more power and to hear the turbo spool up is pretty cool... but in order to hear the turbo it sounds like a SRI is in order.. and again, if I do just the intake, i'm thinking that I should really do the ECU map too huh?

The car runs very rich stock, so adding an intake is fine. Infact you will still be quite rich even with the intake.

hey man, i was around in your other thread, and @ this point i'd recommend just spending some time searching these forums.

the people that KNOW these motors back and forth are not going to bother answering your questions, simply because there are many many other threads where the exact same topics are addressed. i don't mean to offend you, but it's the way it is. i've observed this on every single online forum i've been on.

your intake question and tons more can be answered just by perusing or searching. otherwise, you can create threads like this, and, odds are you'll get some replies, but you won't ever hear from the experts.

to answer your question, your ECU can prolly figure out how to handle an intake. just remember to reset the ECU (disconnect battery for awhile) as a part of install and subsequently drive it lightly for 100 miles so that the ECU figures out the changes you made.

thanks guys! what intake would be best to go with keeping everything else stock?

do I have to worry about upgrading the motor mounts? I don't want to bust the motor out of the car lol

Your mechanic's a retard. The engine only takes as much air as it needs. The stock airbox isn't choking off the air needed by a stock car too badly. The extra airflow that isn't needed simply isn't going to be ingested.

Put an intake on, a rear motor mount in and leave it at that. It's a pretty fun package that way with no hassles.

this fucker is drive by wire...not some cable driven shit your mechanic is use to...when the engine doesnt want anymore air the ecu will close the throttle plate and no more problem...and just like everyone says LTFTs will adjust to make sure you get the right AFRs...now your problems come when the car cant make those adjustments...when you get to the point where you are allowing it to breath too well...for example you could run into some trouble when you go the downpipe route...some do...some dont...but a SRI and turbo inlet are not going to mess your car up

I agree it is not necessary. Your cars MAF allows the ecu to be quite forgiving. However, things will always work better and work to their full potential when they are "tuned" to work with the car.

Definitely go for the intake, and even for a new TMIC and inlet.

After changing the whole intake on mine (replaced the stock air box with a Cobb SRI, changed the TMIC as well as the turbo inlet) the AFRs did not change, and will not change as long as the MAF will actually "see" that air passing through. Moreover, I can see even richer AFRs in WOT (before the change AFR was below 10.5 quite seldom, now I can see 10.0-10.1 quite often).

Needless to say that the jet sound from the SRI is awesome, the car responds better and not that it only feels, it also has more torques and horsepower (dyno proved it) - all these with a stock ECU.

I don't know if you have gotten you intake or not already, but it is a dramatic improvement on a stock car. It really wakes it up with a significant power gain as well as letting you hear, quite clearly, the turbo spool, wastegate opening, and the BPV "pshhhhing". As far as the AFR's are concerned, under WOT the car is very, very rich and the intake didn't do a damn thing to lean them out. I've seen as much as 9.5 under WOT in the upper rpm range and for the most part it stays under 10.5ish under WOT.

Now in regards to the RMM, this is a very simple mod to do, just follow the included instructions and you cant go wrong. This will keep the engine from bounching around under accel/deccel and will make the shifting feel a bit smoother.

All in all I would say intake/RMM are a great start for a stock car, and well worth the sub $400 price tag.
